stick invert 2

You and I have talked occasionally about how you cannot see the surface of the water unless you have a stick to engage the surface and reveal its presence (you get the stick, the surface, and the refraction of the stick (so this gives the wisdom of the action in addition to a ‘result’). Taking this analogy and thinking about risk, it occurs to me that although it has become a commonplace to ridicule religious ideas and practices in a secular society, extreme secularism (such as is now the case in UK) presumes that ‘all will be ok if one throws away the stick’ – but surprise surprise! it doesnt fix it.. you just get ‘ennui’ (listless..odious..hate..) so we need the theatrical use of various types of stick and the humility to know that we don’t look for content within the stick, even as we need to use such devices as a bridge to meaning..like the African lukasa’. There is evidently a human need for the use of little ‘triggers’ (deck of cards, baseball, stump, seated conversation, walk and talk in the museum) to create a tangible form of engagement which reminds us of what we are within… in the same way as the stick reminds us of the waters surface, which we otherwise forget too easily.
